Welcome

Although there has been very little response to these newsletters to date, I find that they are being indexed by the search-engines and it seems best to avoid confusion by better identification. So, Colonsay Kindred will continue to specialise in family history, and this newsletter will continue with more general material but under the more useful name of Colonsay History. Back numbers of both publications will be indexed jointly for ease of use and contributions, corrections and comment are earnestly invited by byrne[at]colonsay.org.uk

The Voyage of the Spencer, 1806

Readers may wish to know about a recent publication “The 1806 Voyage of The Spencer” by Hector John Munn which is subtitled “A search for the Scottish Origins of James Hector Munn”, ISBN 9781493151387.

In the summer of 1806 the Spencer lay at anchor of Colonsay whilst 115 islanders were ferried out together with their limited possessions, bound for a new life in Prince Edward Island. “The passengers were [all] related in some way to two family heads named McNeill and McMillan. For example 20 year old James Munn had just married Elizabeth McMillan and their siblings James McMillan and Ann Munn would be married as soon as they reached PEI.”

These were Selkirk Settlers headed for Belle River and Wood Islands – where their gravestones are mute testimony to the grim reality of the agricultural revolution that drove these pioneers from their native heath.

Hector Munn gives graphic detail of the vessel in which they sailed, the background to the venture and a very detailed analysis of the passenger list. Obviously Hector has a particular interest in his own family line, but the voyage of the Spencer was of pivotal significance in Colonsay because it was properly organised and carried through. Letters were received back home in Colonsay – despite the difficulties in PEI many of the migrants became confident and independent; they encouraged others to follow on and, as conditions worsened in Colonsay, a trickle became a flood.

Although one might not agree with every one of Hector's conclusions, he raises many interesting questions and his work should inspire additional research and comment. He includes invaluable appendices, with a commentary upon many of the individual pioneers as well as the complete passenger list.

Books such as this are often somewhat ephemeral – if anyone in your family emigrated to Canada from Colonsay between 1790 and 1850 you really should obtain a copy now. It may not be the definitive work, but you or your children will one day wish you had it to hand.

Murdoch MacNeill of Colonsay - his portrait

Murdoch MacNeill was the subject of a portrait by Kenneth MacLeay RSA, published in 1870 by “Mr. Mitchell, publisher to the Queen”. It is perhaps worth noting that this portrait is available in a high-quality reproduction and might make an excellent gift for the right person – incidentally, the sitter is wearing MacNeill of Colonsay tartan. The following address carries a picture of the work at Item 23. http://www.tartansauthority.com/resources/graphics-library/macleay-portraits/sitters-details/

The Murdoch MacNeill in question was “born in 1838, in the Island of Colonsay, then the property of the late John McNeill of Colonsay. His father, Murdoch McNeill, has been sixty-five years in the service of the Colonsay family, and has the principle charge of Lord Colonsay's extensive stock of highland cattle. He is now seventy years of age, he married Mary Currie. One of his sons is head gardener of Colonsay, another was a veterinary surgeon in the federal army during the late American war, while a third son commanded a troop or Irregular Horse, in the confederate army, having previously served as an artilleryman in the Indian army, during the Mutiny.
“Murdoch MacNeill, the subject of the Portrait, has been in the service of the family from his boyhood. He was first employed in assisting his father, afterwards in trapping rabbits, &c., and is now game-keeper to Lord Colonsay. He married in 1861, Catherine McNeill, a native of the same Island, and has four children.
“His grandfather's name was Neil McNeill, and his grandmother was Mary Brown.”

As will be apparent to any reader of the October edition of Colonsay Kindred, Murdoch MacNeill was therefore related to virtually every native Colonsay person until very recently. To recap: the Colonsay kinship pattern is dominated by the descendants of two couples born and married in the 18th century: (1) Donald Currie with Annabella Currie, and (2) Neil McNeill with Mary Brown. Couple (1) had three daughters: Barbara, married Campbell; Catherine, married McNeill; Mary, married McKinnon. Couple (2) had four sons: Angus, Duncan, Malcolm, Murdoch. These sibships were connected on 9 January 1830 when Catherine Currie married Duncan “Ban” McNeill.

Dr. Mary McNeill, daughter to emigrants Alexander and Mary

Dr. Mary McNeill is yet another person who deserves a place in the pantheon of distinguished Colbhasaichs. She was the daughter of Colonsay emigrants Alexander and Mary, and was born c. 1859 in Arran , Bruce County, Ontario. She brought credit to her name when became the first woman to register as a medical doctor with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. There is an interesting biographical account in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/macneill_mary_13E.html

Rev. D[onald] McNeill, who ministered at Elderslie

In the forty-fifth year of its publication, The Baptist Year Book for Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories and British Columbia recorded the death of another highly-respected Colonsay emigrant:

Rev. D. McNeill — Among those whom in the past conventional year the Lord called from their labors to rest with the blessed was the Rev. D. McNeill. Bro.McNeill was a native of Colonsay, Scotland, and, with his people, emigrated to this country in the pioneer days of Bruce County, settling in Arran Township. Early in life he became a Christian, and early began to exercise his gifts in Christian service, and while yet on the farm he, in association with Elder Sinclair, engaged in the ministry of the Word. Upon the opening of Woodstock College he entered its classes, and there pursued a full and successful course, graduating in 1867. At this time there was a movement to start a Baptist cause in Paisley, and Bro. McNeill was called to the pastorate. From this he reached out to surrounding points, particularly where now is Chesley and the Elderslie Baptist Church. During the eleven or twelve years of his ministry in Paisley the Lord abundantly blessed his labors, the church increasing from a few constituent members to about three hundred. He afterward labored in Stayner, Ormond, and finally Port Elgin, with associated churches. Bro. McNeill was an able preacher of the Word, combining mental strength with deep spirituality. Many arose to call him blessed, and the survivors cherish his memory with tenderest affection. An honest, true and noble man of God passed away in Jan. 1900, in his seventy-fifth year.

This obituary seems to refer to Donald, a son of Lachlan McNeill of Kilchattan. Donald's brother John had been the first to emigrate, and his reports of Canada were so encouraging that the rest of his family and some others followed after him, "a great blow to the [Baptist] Church, as nine members left the island together" in 1852. Donald was known in Colonsay as the "Minister mór" due to his height of 6ft 5in. Donald was 28 years of age when he emigrated and as an adult he is said to have enrolled in a nearby school to gain a command of English before moving on to Woodstock College. Further details will be found in The Baptist Church in Colonsay, pp. 22-23

The McNeill Portraits 1880 - 1910

A collection of 65 largely unidentified photographs was published in Colonsay Kindred, October edition. The subjects are believed to be members of the extended McNeill of Colonsay family ca. 1880 – 1910 and are mostly in the form of cartes de visite. This suggests that there will be duplicate copies elsewhere – one or two have already been matched by digital comparisons on a search engine, but the search goes on. Some of the subjects are public figures – it is hoped that McNeills will pass the word worldwide so that this wonderful archive can be properly indexed. Hover over each image for any information already to hand and do please encourage others to have a look. See the portraits here.

Archibald McNeill, Laird of Colonsay, his will

Archibald McNeill was laird of Colonsay and married the daughter of the 5 th earl of Granard; he “sold” Colonsay to his first cousin, John, in 1805. Archibald's career is shrouded in some slight mystery and may be reviewed in a future edition of Colonsay History (January 2015?). A brief summary appears in Loder “Colonsay and Oronsay” p. 168. In the meantime, his extremely lengthy will, which was very difficult to decipher due to poor reproduction, has now been transcribed and is given below. The following brief summary is perhaps inadequate, it is Kevin Byrne's attempt to understand the gist of it – a better interpretation would be gratefully received.

Summary: Will dated 27th February 1808 and proven 28th January 1809, when Francis Earl of Moira and Charles Rivington Broughton were appointed as acting executors.

Archibald McNeill of Richmond in Surrey left to his wife, Lady Anne McNeill nee Anna Georgina Forbes, daughter of George, 5 th Earl of Granard, the leasehold interest in their dwelling house at Richmond, together with all the contents. Other specified assets were to be converted into securities and the income was to be divided equally between his wife (for a life interest) and any legitimate child or children. The named executors or “Trustees” were to be Rt. Hon. Francis Earl of Moira, Rt. Hon. George Earl of Granard, Sir James Pulteney, Bart., Major General Duncan Campbell of 91 st Regiment, Charles Rivington Broughton of the Secretary of State's Office Esq., and Malcolm McNeill of “Collinson”, Argyll.

Final beneficiaries of the “trusts” established to administer the “personal Estate” seem to be Malcolm McNeill, Capt. Donald McNeill of the 91st Regiment and Charles Rivington Broughton, “in common share”. On the other hand, a reference is made to further unspecified “monies mortgages or governments ffarms lands messuages and xxx estates vested in me upon any trust or by way of mortgage or which I have power to dispose of by this my will with their respective xxx and appurtenances ….”

It seems to have been a deathbed will, which gives very detailed instructions as to financial provisions. One wonders how large, if any, an estate was available for disposal. Colonsay had already been transferred to John McNeill, the cousin; is it possible that some proceeds of that transaction were involved? Can one discover the value of the estate in question?
